I Don't Get It - And Not For The First Time

I would like to point out that I have a deep distrust of any organised religion. I am most certainly not an apologist for the Catholic Church and I do not know enough about the workings of Islam to comment intelligently. Despite this I feel that I must make comment.
The story goes something like this...
Former member of The Hitler Youth, Joseph Ratzinger, currently better known as Pope Benedict XVI returns home to Germany for the first time since his investiture. One of the reasons for this visit was to address The University of Regensburg. The main point of his speech was to explore the historical and philosophical differences between Islam and Christianity, and the relationship between violence and faith.
Contained within his speech was a quotation attributed to Emperor Manuel II Paleologos of the Byzantine Empire from the 14th Century. The emperor's words were, "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
The Pope went on to state that violence was "incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul".
Still with me on this? OK then I'll continue...
And what was the response to this speech from the Muslim world?
Yip you've got it in one...violent demonstrations around the globe. With Kashmir, Cairo, Gaza City, Pakistan, India and Turkey amongst others taking part in the usual flag and effigy burning shit.
And just to put the cherry on the top, in the West Bank city of Nablus two churches were firebombed on Saturday in attacks claimed by a group which said it was protesting against the Pope's remarks.
So that'll be the violence the Pope was talking about then.
Frankly I'm tired of this this shite in the name of God, Allah or whoever else. In my opinion everyone needs to lighten up. The Pope should perhaps be looking at the bloody history of The Catholic Church before commenting on other faiths. Whilst the Muslim world would do well to remember that the quotation was 700 years old and the words did not belong to this Pope.
I understand that to a great many people religion is a highly emotive topic but to use your faith as an excuse to perpetrate violent acts must surely go against everything that your set of ideals/beliefs stand for.
A more in depth article on this story can be read here
On a lighter note I will shortly be kicking the shit out of the lunatic Christians who believe in End Time.

When religious fanatics are faced with criticism, they ALWAYS respond with hatred and violence. You can't threaten the very delicate balance of their faith. No one wants to come to that very frightening conclusion that they have devoted their life to a lie.

(The christian asshole on my blog is a fine example: threaten his faith and he threatens my daughter with adult rape.)

It still amazes me how one religious fanatic can point the finger at another. There has been voilence perpetrated by every one of them. They should try opening a history book rather than the "good" book on ocassion.

You have to hand it to al-Qaeda. They have nothing if not a sense of humour. The text comes from the AFP news agency.

"Al-Qaeda in Iraq said in response to remarks by Pope Benedict XVI linking Islam with violence, that it will wage jihad (holy war) until the West is defeated, in a statement posted on the Internet Monday."

That resolves everything...

i tackled the same story on my blog, and had a reasonable comment-discussion on the topic. i think it's fair to say that if someone is claiming to be a christian but is also threatening violence, then they aren't a christian. case in point: Bush, Catholic church, ummm... Bush again, and... cheney (is that guy satan or what?)
