A Genius To The End

I know that everyone is writing about this today but so far I have failed to find someone with my point of view. So I'll have to add to the mountains of words already written.
Last night Italy won the World Cup for the fourth time in their history. What should have been a great night for The Azzuri was somewhat overshadowed by a late red card for French captain Zinedine Zidane playing his last ever match.
Zizou is arguably the most talented player of his generation and capable of doing things with a football that mere mortals can only dream of. In a world where the word genius is coined too freely this man did seem to have been blessed. In the 1998 Final his head won France the trophy for the first time in their history.
Last night however his head was used in a whole different way. A flying head butt of spectacular proportions on Italian defender Marco Materazzi earnt the great man an early bath. An ordinary player could never have produced a moment of such ugly beauty.
I know that it is wrong to glorify violence but there are times when you have to stand back in admiration. Last night was just such an occassion.
ZZ I salute you, a maverick to the last.
If I can find a video of the incident I will post it here.

I broadly agree.
My initial "bringing the game into disrepute" response has given way to a degree of admiration.
It was a beautifully executed and timed headbutt.
The work of a master.

If you manage to find a photo of the moment ZZ's head makes contact, let me know? I am going to redesign my banner round that image as a tribute.

Zidane's an idiot, even though he has some idea of what to do with a football. How gutted must he have been, walking right past the trophy on his way to the lockerroom? "Haaha," as Nelson from The Simpsons would say.
