There is no real point to this post it is simply an opportunity to vent my spleen at the actions of Ian Wright.
If you are outwith the UK this will probably mean nothing to you and for that I apologise. I understand that The BBC have made all matches available live on the internet. If you have masochistic tendancies please try and view one where the studio panel contains Mr Wright.
As the World Cup rumbles on I find myself enjoying the football more but the studio punditry less. This is all thanks to the inarticulate pish being spouted by idiot savant Ian Wright. On a football field with the ball at his feet and the goal in his sights he was deadly. Stick him in a studio and ask him a simple question and he turns into Rainman's dumber brother.
Let's list some examples of his idiocy
- In a qualifying match England surprisingly lost to Northern Ireland. Ian Wright in the studio, as a paid summariser, refused to speak after the match in effect he abandoned his duties and behaved like a spoilt little brat. I have no issue with bad losers because as the legendary Vince Lombardi once said "show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser". What I do object to is someone being paid at my expense failing to fulfil their obligations.
- In a pre-tournament warm up match English talisman Steven Gerrard took a blatant dive to earn his side a penalty. As a summariser there is a duty to comment on this and condem Steven Gerrard for cheating. Ian Wright however elected to condone Steven Gerrards actions on the basis that other teams will cheat against England so why shouldn't they participate. What rankled even further is that the three other members of the pannel thought this was fair comment. Yet this is the same Ian Wright who continually chastises foreign players in the English Premier League when they participate in what FIFA euphemistically term "simulation". Talk about double standards and since when did two wrongs make a right anyway?
- Coming right up to date now. When asked about Holland, during their match against Serbia & Montenegro, he simply replied that he did not care about them, he only cared about England. Fine if you're a fan but utterly shite if you are actually being paid to provide comment and insight on the tournament.
- During the same match he refused to mention Serbia & Montenegro by name. Preferring instead to use S&M and then giggle like a moronic schoolboy.
Perhaps what should be most embarrasing to Mr Wright is that in addition to him the BBC have chosen to employ distinguished former players from overseas to share the pundit duties. So far the Brazilian Leonardo and French national Marcel Desailly have both displayed a better command of English than Wrighty.
Quite why the BBC have elected to spend public money on this nonentity is a mystery to me.

It's actually quite an interesting article/condition.

Did he not have his own chat show at one stage?
