In 1989 Chuck D and the mighty Public Enemy urged black America to rise up and "Fight The Power". The song became a rallying cry for a section of society which was experiencing perceived neglect and marganilisation. Wonderfully evocative lyrics such as
"Elvis was a hero to most, but he never meant sh!t to me. He's straight out racist, that sucker was simple and plain, mother fvck him and John Wayne"
rang out across the airways and provided the soundtrack to Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing. If you haven't seen the movie I suggest that you do. Whilst the political message may be a little questionable you cannot escape the power of the performances from Lee, Danny Aiello, John Turturro and especially Giancarlo Esposito as Buggin' Out.
Anyway, fast forward 17 years, switch nations and indeed continents not to mention colour and it appears that the thrust of the song has been picked up on. Following my rant against the nanny state a week or two ago it seems that the hospitality industry in this city has decided enough is enough. I was delighted to walk past a newstand this afternoon and spot this as the lead story of my local evening paper.
It's not much but it certainly is a step in the right direction.
I have promised regular contributer Llammy that I will write more about the smoking ban this week but sadly I do not currently have the time but trust me it is on it's way.
In the meantime let's celebrate a small victory for "Davenelli's Coalition For Fun & Freedom". Up the silent majority.

Go Dave! Do you think someone in these breweries is reading your blog? lol
Here's hoping they get this all sorted efore I visit your fair city later this year. I can't stand the thought of drinking out of plastic in a bar. Too much like a kids party for my liking but without the jelly and ice cream.
As for the smoking ban - I am well up for your continuing rant on that subject.
Great site loved it alot, will come back and visit again.
